The Future of Education

As I encouraged/scolded/nagged my kid for the umpteenth time to study for his “听写” (the Chinese equivalent of an English spelling test) I couldn’t help but think to myself what a waste of time it was.

Don’t let the pointlessness of what I thought this exercise really was show, I thought to myself. With my the most serious expression I could muster, I told him how important it was.

Grades determine your class and that can determine the friends you make. And those in turn can impact the things you learn and your character. Which loop back to impact your grades, which determine your class and so on.

But that’s not really true, is it? I don’t think so.

Not with the world going the way it’s going.

May have been true a decade or two ago; maybe even up to a few years ago.

But now?

I don’t know.
