Blogs are dead?

I don’t know when was the last time I actually visited a blog. It’s even been a long time since I last did a search on Google and visited a website. The AI summaries are usually sufficient for me.

Oftentimes I don’t even go to Google. It’s just asking the question on Gemini or Claude.

I realise what I do probably isn’t what other people do. AI usage, I have found, differs significantly from person to person. The time we’ve spent on AI tools may be similar, but the depth at which we have experienced the tools can be vastly different.

People with paid plans vs. free plans also often see AI tools quite differently, as do people who have access to multiple AI tools at work vs. those who have had to do with “consumer” options.

So all that just to say: I think blogs are somewhat dead. Or at least traditional blogs are dead, where writers used to write for an audience, now we are likely writing for bots. AI agents.

They’ll take what we write and pull it up, summarise it, write it in their own words, served into a chat interface on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or whatever AI tool that scrapes data from the web.

“Donn Lee” on “edonn.com” won’t be in my voice; it’ll be my voice pulled through an AI translator (not language to language, but words to tokens and back to words, or something like that).

Is it sad? Yeah, somewhat. But I suppose it’s evolved.

People’s voices now aren’t on blogs as they used to be; they’ve moved to platforms like Substack or Reddit; or X/Twitter/Bluesky etc.. Platforms own our voices now.

It’s been such a long time since I wrote here. I’ve been tempted to just pull all this down. More than 20 years of writing, feels like a pity; but as the Buddhist story goes: Buddhism’s like a raft that you use to cross the water; once you’ve crossed, don’t carry the raft on your back.

Maybe this blog’s like that too. It’s the raft that’s served its purpose.

Anyway, in other news: I’m trying to hit a sub 50-minute 10K this year, and after training for a few months with this goal in mind, I think that I’m not going to hit it unfortunately. 52 minutes seems like a reasonable stretch goal, 51 minutes at best; but a sub-50, with the mileage I’m on (~22-25km per week), seems like it could be a bit too much. I don’t know.

Claude’s telling me: do a sub-24 minute 5K, that’s the fitness equivalent.

Well, yes, maybe.

But it’s still not a sub-50 10K.

And as I get older it just seems like this goal is getting less likely. Maybe I could “cheat” a little and go for it in another country. Take a couple weeks holiday at the end of the year in a cooler climate to get that scratched off my bucket list.
